A Cheater's Paradise?

This is a discussion thread · 9 replies
Paul Timbone:
At the casino, when I mentioned, I plan to start playing online, they immediately said bad idea, I said why, and they said players at same table could be collaborating and cheating with cell phones. With Omaha, the game I play, I would be at a devastating disadvantage, and get taken to the cleaners whenever this occurred. Is it really this easy to cheat, or are there safeguards against this.

I guess a second concern, is if something goes wrong, are the online casinos answerable to anyone, or is this all totally unregulated.

I'd really like to play online, but can it be trusted?

My attitude has always been to not worry about it too much if I am winning. If the cheques keep coming in, who cares? Many of us have played for years and won without cheating at all.
If you must know, the online casinos all supposedly guard againt collusion via automated software and review of hands after the fact by live personnel.

Absolutely people cheat. Why would they not? It's too easy to have Instant Messaging type programs open, or speaker phone, or be friends sitting in the same room. Most (all?) of these offshore online rooms are completely unregulated, even though they'll tell you they use 9 kinds of random number generators, etc. It's fun, but it's a play at your own risk sorta thing.
Just understanding what people might be doing will help you in the rooms, although I prefer the interaction of in-person play. It's hard to see the guy across the table's hand twitch when he gets pocket aces if you're looking at a computer screen!
Good luck,
Adam

I think you are pretty safe at low levels. If they are going to cheat, I think they would do it where it would be more profitable. Most of what I have read on other forums says it really isn't that hard to spot unless they are pros, in which case they won't be at low limit tables. In fact, I've often heard it's harder to cheat well than to just play well. And you can them report them and the sites do fairly well with the info. And, when it's all said and done, I have played at Paradise about 6 weeks now and have won about $220 dollars. So if there is cheating, I am managing to win some anyways. I cannot speak for higher levels however.

This reminds me of the scene from "Say Anything" where John Cusack is talking about women to some guy friends.
"If you guys are such experts on women then why are you hanging out here without girlfriends behind the Quickie Mart on a Friday night"?

"By choice!"

If you play in only tourneys, the chance of being at the same table with colluders is very small and of course they get eliminated sometimes. You can also play headsup.

I always thought cheating would be at higher level too. But now I think higher levels would be more scrutinized and that people who lost $100 would be less likely to investigate possible cheating than those who lost $1000.
As far as safeguarding against cheating. How in the hell can they safeguard against two or three cell phone users? Reviewing hands? Maybe if directed/asked to to do so. Randomly? yeah ok.
