Hi,

We're a mid-sized company looking to setup our email servers. What would you recommend? Exchange / Gmail / Open Exchange / Zimbra? or none of the above...
We need to share emails, have groups of email users, calendars and notes etc..

Thanks,
Jeremy
This would in the most part depend on what resources you have available to maintain the system. You'd not want to get something based on PHP and then find you don't have the people who know PHP! Of course, you could always consider using a hosted solution too, such as the offered by Google. Personally, I've heard very good things about both Open-Xchange and Zimbra. Perhaps the following link will be of help:

Either way, I'd suggest you stick with open standards and not lock yourself into a proprietary system.

Yep, agreed on that 100%.. I love the gmail solution, it's still a bit 'immature' in terms of calendars / notes etc.. But there are 'addons' you can use with Firebird etc.. Still as of now (June 2008) it's basically just a v. stable IMAP email server... If that's all you need you can't beat it..

Exchange is great when it's working, it can cause you a lot of headaches if it goes wrong.. Rackspace offer a managed exchange solution - This takes away all the technical hassling - but I think you have to be already be a Rackspace client, not sure.. It had a bit of trouble at the beginning, but seems to have settled down now, and generally is a good setup. They offer a easy to use management console too.

However, I'd tend to agree with Iain and go with something open, long term it's bound to be safer. Maybe there's a managed open exchange / hosted open exchange company somewhere?
There must be a few!Emotion: wink
