How to run a charity Holdem event?

Does anybody have any tips or pointers on how to
run a charity Texas Holdem poker tournament?
Things like:
- rules
- dealer training
- betting structures
My wife works for an agency for mentally *** adults. They were considering a charity poker event; possibly
8 tables with various buy-ins. For example, maybe havea $1,000.00 buy in table with a $2,000.00 prize, a $500.00 buy-in table with a $1000.00 prize and so on...

Anybody have any pros, cons, suggestions, legal issues?

This would be in New York State.
Thanks in advance,
Patrick

Check the laws first. In most areas, the awards are restricted by state law. In Arizona, for instance, a charity gambling event becomes illegal when the value of the top prize exceeds $35 for the entire event, or exceeds $4 for any individual win. Most importantly, while it may only be a misdemeanor to participate in a gambling event, it is a felony to organize one.
Here is a link to all the state gambling laws:

If the laws appear ambiguous or contradictory, consult the attorney for the charity, and/or call your District Attorney's office and ask about enforcement of gambling laws in your area.
When you get past the legal issue, use google groups to search for past posts to RGP on running charity poker events or tournaments. Then start sending emails to people who have actually run them.

These past posts have "charity," "poker" and "tournament" in them: http://groups.google.com/groups?q=charity+poker+tournament

Good luck.

My old fraternity ran a charity holdem tournament this year. Apparently they cleared it with the DA who said it was no problem. They only had one prize, first place got 1000$, 20$ buyin with rebuys in the first hour. It was chaotic to say the least, 200+ people, many dealers who hadn't even played before, but they made it work. Drop me an email and I can give you an email of the guys who set it up.

Hi Patrick.
I don't know the law in NY State but it's probably illegal without some license and maybe illegal without any possibility of getting a license. If you want specifics on running the tourney feel free to email me. Or check my article on the subject:

Good luck. I just had a very successful charity tournament where the charity took 25% of the money. I've played in another where the charity took 100% of the money and gave out prizes that were donated or purchased at a discount. I'm happy to talk with you about this. Just email me.
