Matt Savage and Jim Miller pull a "Becky Behnen" on the WSOP brush personnelThis is a discussion thread · 30 replies Tournament Dealer: Those of you who've been on the tournament circuit know who I am. I've been dealing the major tournaments since the 1991. For obvious reasons, I don't want to use my name. All of this can be verified by anybody who cares to bother.Matt Savage and Jim Miller, co-directors of the latest WSOP, have pulled a "Becky" on the brush of the WSOP. I'll explain how. For background, 2% of the total of the entry fees for the $10,000 event was taken "for tournament personnel". Of that, the dealers (about 170 total) were given 65%, while the tournament staff (non dealers) were given 35%. There were 2576 entries, which means that $515,200 was taken out for the tournament staff. In addition, there were three late $1,000 buyin tournaments during the final week. 3% was taken out of the entry fees for that and put in the main pool. There were a total of roughly 1100 entries for the three tournaments, or another $33,000, making a total of $548,200. In addition, all tokes (tips) left by the players in the $10,000 event and in the three $1,000 events were also added to the pool. While I don't have an exact figure on this, the amount of the final toke per dealer would put it right at $100,000. So we'll make the final figure to be divided a total of $650,000. Also, "Brush" refers to the people who worked the live games during the tournament and either ran the signup boards or performed the duties of seating players, running chips, bringing in setups, making dealer rack (bank) fills, and other duties. They do not, to my knowledge, include the floor supervisors. I can tell you from observation that these people worked their tails off during the entire tournament, as the WSOP had a lot of live games. When the dealers held their meeting to decide how to divide up their end of the tips, the subject of including the brush came up. The dealers were told by at least four supervisors that the brush were getting a share of the administrative end (the 35% that went to the tournament staff). Based on that information, the dealers decided that there was no reason to also vote the brush a share of their money, although dealers were encouraged to make individual (private) tokes of each brush person on the shift they worked (this is traditional). Many did the latter, myself included. As a bit more background, the "toke" for the $10,000 event was meant to be a bonus or reward for the staff, who worked hard the whole tournament. And in most cases, this bonus was good. For example (and some dealers will probably be unhappy that this is being made public if it hasn't been mentioned already), dealers that received a full share (which was over 80% of all dealers who worked the final event) got a bit over $2,400 apiece. Not a bad week's work, even if most of us did put in 60-70 hours that week. The brush didn't do as well. The staff end of the $650,000 would be 35% of that, or about $227,500. This is to be divided is some way among the directors, assistant directors, floor personnel, dealer coordinators, and the brush. I would put a rough guess that about 40 non brush personnel were included and about 40 brush personnel (anybody who has actual figures is welcome to submit them). That's about 80 people. Out of the $227,500 to be divided among the (non dealer) tournament staff, the brush personnel's share was a princely $120 apiece. One-hundred-twenty dollars each. That's a total of roughly $5,000 out of the $227,500. Can you say "screwed"? I thought you could. Excuse me, but there's something majorly wrong there. I did very well as a dealer, getting a full share of the final "toke" and making more money for the WSOP than I did in any of the previous twelve years. But I know that the brush didn't make a lot of money in player tokes, and as said, they worked as hard as anybody else. To give them a paltry $120 apiece pardon me, but they might as well have stiffed them. Matt and Jim: you were the ones who probably had the final say in this. I trust that you sleep well at night. That's my opinion, and you're all welcome to submit your own and correct any errors or discrepancies on my part.

Or 96% to the dealers and 4% to the brush. Or 97% to the dealers and 3% to the brush. Whetever you dealers think is fair, since you (the dealers) could control how the wealth is shared. hpestes receiving mail via hot mail dot com

Whetever you dealers think is fair, since you (the dealers) could control how the wealth is shared.[/nq] There's a long story involved in how the dealers even got any say in how our end of the final toke was distributed. It involves a lot of politics (translated: whining and bitching) that aren't important enough to repeat. To put it simply, while there are quite a few good people in our midst, more than a few of the 160-170 who worked the last event are greedy, petty, whining little gits (which in fairness would be the same with almost any group of people). The few chronic complainers cried about giving full shares to two dealers who had only worked part of the final event because of deaths in the family. Thankfully, the majority overruled them (very vocally). The brush probably would have gotten a half-share each (which would have amounted to about $1100 with the inclusion of the additional shares) from the dealer's end, had we not been told by several reliable sources that they would be included in the adminstrative end. That would have amounted to roughly 12% of our tokes. We had no idea that they'd be royally shafted and only given $120 each.

B Brown: No axes to grind, just questions for a friend of mine who is thinking about moving here to become a dealer.Regarding the WSOP, do the dealers work for tokes only or are they also paid a base? How much of a base? How about the brush and other floor personnel? Same questions. It would seem that if there is a big disparity between base pay of a brush and a dealer, the difference in total pay may not be as big as it appears when using "tokes only" figures. Thanks.

I had him killfiled for a long time but undid it because it's so over the top as to be cartoonish. I don't know why he's been so active lately. Seems like even ROWDY has WSOP fever.

If a majority decides to chip in money for the brush, then do it. There will always be people who will say they already spent the money or whatever. Just tell them that this money will be deducted from their split next year, plus interest. I know there is probably a big turnover in the dealer ranks, but wouldn't you guys feel much better if the brush got some kind of compensation? Vinny
