Playing NLHE exclusively VS. mixing it up

My strategy lately is to remain focused strictly on NLHE cash games, online ring games ( I only play the short-handed tables) and single table SnG's. My goal is to build the sharpest game possible and I feel that staying focused specifically on no-limit will give me that edge. My long-term vision is to hone my skills for NLHE tournament success. I find that I have trouble switching gears between limit and no-limit, so I've resolved to devote all my time to no-limit.
I'd like to hear others ideas about whether playing a variety of games (not just hold'em but stud, omaha, razz etc.) helps your overall game or if it's better to stick with a specialty.
Thanks,
-bull

I think each game helps you with your overall skill-set by forcing you to view what you know as poker through different eyes, helping you to review common situations in other ways that you may have missed before. So I recommend playing all games. I personally play PL and NL Holdem as my main money-game, but when I need a break or just feel the bug you'll find me playing PL Omaha, Omaha 8b, Stud, Stud 8b, 5-card stud, Triple Draw Lowball (2-7 and A-5), Razz, and even some Pinapple. I think they're all fun (except I'm not so sure about Pineapple, I guess I need some time to fully develop an opinion on that).
I also will play anything and everything in a live homegame. Jack's back hooks, Anaconda, Cowabunga, Red/Black, St. Louis Holdem, Auction, etc, etc, with wild cards, buying extra cards, you name it. After you play a night of mixed games like that, it really makes it seem like childs-play to figure out what two hole cards a person has (like in Holdem). It gives good perspective and practice with the skills that relate to all games, like deception, hand-reading, psychology, odds, etc.

I'd say play them all. Like Fast Eddie said in The Hustler, "Pool's pool, regardless of the rules." Same game.

To me, the answer is "both!" Playing other forms of poker always seems to awaken something basic in me, and I think it's good to do it often. Plus, a lot of the time, it helps sharpen me at my specialty as well. So, my answer would be that it's good to have a specialty and play many forms of poker besides that specialty. This includes focusing exclusively on some other form of poker for a (somewhat) extended period if it takes your fancy.

couldnt disagree more w most of the above. i have spent years learning the finer points of HE and still struggle. Im still learning every day. Why divert time to another game that would take me years just to be as good at that as i am at HE? Thats like telling Tiger to play basketball too, not just golf.

Read the already-referenced archive thread. Most of them agree that playing all of them bring a number of different skills and viewpoints to your overall game and improve all of your games. Maybe that's why you're still struggling at HE.

So you don't get your ass handed to you when you play in a mixed, dealer's-choice game. A true "Poker Player" plays poker, not just Hold'em.
