It's a very difficult one to assess - for me Michael Jordan will always be my sporting hero and the greatest ever basketball player.

Here's one for you. Don Bradman - cricketer. If you look at stats, no one has ever been even remotely close to this guy. Many say Roger Federer but he isn't even the all-time major winner in Tennis.

I think Lance Armstrong was the greatest and most inspiring sportsman ever. He almost died of cancer and went on to be the best cyclist the world has ever seen.

I am with Chelsea4me here. I think you need to find the best person in the most popular sport in the world to be able to say that person was the best sportsman of all time and for that reason I'm saying Pele.

If Michael Phelps gets his 8 out of 8 gold medals in this Olympic Games I might be inclined to say he is the best sportsman ever.

8 out of 8 AND 7 world records and 1 Olympic record too. Pretty impressive. He's now got half of the USA's 16 golds! I'm not saying that he is the greatest sportsman ever but he's an elte athlete.
