Tad Perry:
Being the self-proclaimed "soul" of RGP (or should that be "sole" of RGP as in no else from the early 90's posts here any more), I have decided to give a State of the Group Address.
We will start with bad news and go to good news.
We have lost many important contributors. I would ask the members of the group to do some reflection. Wouldn't it, perhaps, have been better NOT to hound certain individuals and keep them here instead of driving them away? Even in the case of individuals who are NOT famous, wouldn't you have rather had Barbara Yoon keeping track of the Super Bowl prediction stats and seeing if RGP, once again, beat the Vegas Oddsmakers? I feel there was value added to this group by such contributions, and that posts like that were far more valuable than a hounding, stalking shadow calling her Lawrence all the time. When Nixon said, "Turn down the thermostat, because it's a good idea, and this is why it's a good idea." people did it! So I'm asking for more and improved efforts toward making everyone comfortable.

Which brings us to the good news. Yes, we've lost these people, but there are new people who seem to have some knowledge and some game. And they do try to get along. I see it. And I appreciate it. We're down to some hardcore practioner's of the online art of poker, and that ain't necessarily a bad thing.
I have not shared freely since 1996, but I'm still here and I do still share to the degree I feel is warranted.

I'm not sure what that means.  But I know that I find it hard to keep up anymore.  I've only been here for a year and a half, but I still use recpoker, and maybe it's because they can't figure out how to group threads correctly, but there is way too much to sift through.

If I start a thread before going to bed, I probably have to go through about five pages to find it when I wake up.
I've only been here for a year and a half, and I was hearing stuff like this from others when I arrived, so who knows.  But there's just sooooooooooooo soooooooooooo much crap here that doesn't need to be here, and it drowns out the group.  If a newbie posts a question about strategy he's likely to get ten responses, any less than half are likely to be knowledgable.
I'm still trying to keep up and skim all the topics at least, but it's constantly harder.  There seems to be much more volume overall, and at the same time far fewer threads that I would actually like to get involved in.

i've only been reading for about 2 years...and this place is getting worst and worst by the day...enough that i rarely read it anymore...

It won't belong b4 i give up on it all together (not to say i'll be missed lol...but if i'm feeling this way, then I'm sure there are several that feel the same way)
There's way too many ppl that think they are funny when they trash valid questions & posts with the same old one liners...and so many fights between so many people...throw in all the ads, and it's barley worth it anymore...
seems the only poker ever addressed anymore is quick one liners to fill in ppl on the basics, rarely is anything substansial discuessed by the group as a whole...there's so little worth reading anymore, which is too bad.
just like the NHL, we'd be better off dissolving and starting fresh.

I thought it was Carter who said that ?
Maybe they both did.

It's a free-rider problem, for the most part. One hound can drive away a valuable contributor, and anyone famous draws hounds just as *** does flies.

Sure. I wish Yoon were here. S/he is a strange cat . . . ok? But a sound math-head and useful contributor.

Not a good analogy. There, a few free-riders didn't and couldn't change the overall outcome. Here, they can.

Some. Overall quality is down. We'll not see the quality of Abdul or PaulP or Caro again, I think.

I thought of Carter also. Didn't he also ask us to not let our cars warm up in the cold mornings, just start it and drive off?

I don't remember that, but I seem to recall Carter wearing a sweater and turning down the thermostat, or was that Mr. Rogers? Hell, I don't know. Carter seemed like Mr. Rogers to me, anway. I'm hazy on details for the entire decade of the '70s.

I like and appreciate the feedback I get on hands, and specific ways of looking at the game... even when it's humbling... but usually its just good food for thought. I don't know if the overall quality is down because I was away for years... I used to read Mike Caro's posts way back, but he was spending a lot of time, at that point, shilling for online poker (it's not a scam!) and spent a good deal of his RGP energy on that. But his posts about small suited connectors was beautiful.

It'd be great for newbies (like myself) to have a a list, and a good sense about who knows exactly what they're talking about... who are the really great contributors here?

Ha! I thought more about this after I posted. Can you believe Carter left office 25 years ago? Seems like just a few years ago. Where has the time gone? Ha! The federal budget was a "mere" $600 billion. Today on the news they were discussing the budget for this coming 2005. It's ONLY $2.6 trillion. And since Carter left office, it's been all republican administrations with the exception of Clinton.
Of course, I'm not calling Carter any kind of fiscal conservative. Because when HE took office, it was "only" $300 billion. He doubled it in only four years. The fact is, they are ALL out of control. They are ALL liars. Republicans, democrats, blah blah blah. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
